Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.-” in front of the rear sight and at the receiver with “38 W.C.F.”. The underside of the receiver is marked “83573” at the front. The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1892 / -WINCHESTER- / PAT. OCT. 14. 1884.”.
Barrel Length: 20″, Round
Sights / Optics: The front sight is german silver blade pinned to a slotted based fixed to the barrel behind the front band. The rear sight is a folding ladder-style sight dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The sight presents a “V”-notch when folded down and the ladder has a “V”-notched slider when folded up. The top tang is drilled, tapped and filled for a peep sight (none included).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2-piece smooth walnut with capped forend, straight grip and steel carbine-style buttplate. The stocks have scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches, a few more notable dings, and some areas of thinning finish, most notable at the toe. There is a crack at the bottom-front of the forend, extending back to the band. There are a couple of minor losses at the rear of the bottom tang. The LOP measures 12 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has mostly worn to white with some scattered light surface oxidation and scratches. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good condition as Antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is well defined. There is scattered light erosion and pitting in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 30% of its metal finish. Strongest remaining finish is in the magazine tube. There is some other finish remaining in protected areas such as around the sights, barrel bands, and lever. Most other surfaces have worn to white or gone to a light patina. There are some scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. The top-rear of the barrel has wear consistent with a previously installed elevator sight, indicating that the rear sight is a replacement. There are tool marks around some screw heads, most notable at the stock mounting screw on the top tang where there is moderate-heavy tool wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition as Antique.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 1892 Carbine made in 1895 and chambered in .38-40 Winchester. This rifle is in about Very Good condition as Antique with about 30% of its original finish remaining. The rifle shows honest wear for its age and retains strong mechanics. This is a nice example of the Model 1892 saddle ring carbine. The .38-40 Win. cartridge was a popular cartridge in its day which split the difference between the power of the .44-40 and .32-20 cartridges. With some remaining original finish and pre-1899 manufacture date, this rifle should be of interest to the Winchester collectors and could be restored and taken back out in the field.
