Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER MODEL 70 300 WIN. MAG. / -MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CT. U.S.A.”. The right side of the barrel is marked “CLASSIC SPORTER BOSS / PATENT NUMBER 5279200”. The top of the barrel at the rear is marked with ovalled “WP”. The left of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-“, the right is marked with the serial number. The bolt is hand-scribed with the last four digits of the serial number.

Barrel Length: 24″, 26” to End of BOSS

Sights / Optics: The top of the receiver has two pairs of drilled and tapped holes for mounting optics (none included). Only one of the holes on the receiver is filled. There is no provision for iron sights.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut with pistol grip, straight comb, cheekpiece, solid orange rubber Winchester buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The stock has only a few scattered light marks and light compressions, most notable on the left above the floorplate and on the edge of the cheekpiece. The checkering is sharp with a few nicked peaks. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad has minor wear and some light discoloration. Overall, the stock is in about Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are some little freckles of discoloration from previous oxidation, some of the most noticeable are on the floorplate. There are a few spots of oxidation, most noticeable on the rear sling swivel stud and on the bolt knob with a few smaller on the barrel. The BOSS muzzle device has a few nicks and dings. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 has long been a staple among American sportsmen, a great example of Winchester’s design and craftsmanship, well deserving of its moniker “The Rifleman’s Rifle”. This example is a Model 70 Classic Sporter BOSS chambered for .300 Winchester Magnum. With the BOSS system, you will be able to precisely tune the barrel harmonics to a variety of loads while also taming the recoil.
