The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “NIC”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The left side of the butt shows a few light vertical scrapes. There are a few other light handling marks on the wood. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The grooves near the muzzle are light grey. The rifling is deep. There is erosion and fouling in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up a bit. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.6.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish as refinished. The underside of the receiver and the top of the receiver legs have surface erosion showing through the new finish. The metal shows scuffs & light handling marks. The bottom metal shows several scrapes. The right side of the receiver shows a small amount of light thinning consistent with cycling. The screw heads are intact. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a green nylon sling. It shows light discoloration as well as oxidation & scrapes on the metal. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition.

Our Assessment: This Harrington & Richardson M1 Garand rifle was made in the early 1950’s. It appears that the rifle was initially converted to an M1 Garand Navy MK2 MOD 0 by inserting a chamber bushing into the barrel which converted the barrel to 7.62mm NATO (7.62x51mm). Since the insets were found to not be reliable, a Springfield barrel chambered in 7.62 NATO was installed. The installation of the 7.62 NATO barrel was done by Harrington & Richardson so the Springfield barrel is appropriately marked “H&R”. Springfield marked the new barrels “7.62” during production and Harrington & Richardson marked the barrels “7.62” during the conversion.
