Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PAT’D OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889. AUG. 1. 1893” and “30-30.” at the receiver. The top of the receiver is marked “MARLIN SAFETY” and the left of the barrel is marked “SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL”. The bottom tang is marked with the serial number. The upper tang is marked “Marlin / MODEL 93”. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number “159692”

Barrel Length: 26″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade that is dovetailed to the top of the barrel. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn U-notch elevator sight that is dovetailed to the barrel. The tang sight is a push-release flip-up aperture that is adjustable for elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a straight grip, straight comb, carbine style steel buttplate and a capped forend. The stocks have scattered compressions, draglines, scratches, and dings. Some of the defects have removed small portions of surface wood, most noticeable on the bottom of the forearm. These imperfections have darkened with age. The top left edge of the firearms has a small crack toward the front. The buttstock shows grain lines that have opined slightly. The wrist has some light material loss at the corners where the tang widens into the frame. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate is worn with a mottled patina, scratches, and dings. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition as Antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is grey with erosion throughout. The rifling is deep.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 40% of its metal finish. There are some scattered spots of surface oxidation, mainly on the barrel and magazine tube. Most of the finish loss has occurred on the magazine tube. There are scattered little nicks, scratches, and dings throughout the metal. There is finish loss on the receiver and lever. The screw heads range from lightly tool marked to disfigured with usable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Very Good condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety, the lever locks up solidly and the action is smooth. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is the first rifle Marlin designed for, then new, smokeless powder cartridges. Marlin christened the improved lever-action Model 1893, and offered it as a rifle or a saddle-ring carbine, both featuring case hardened receivers and sporting blued Ballard match-grade barrels. In 1895, Marlin began chambering its Model 1893 for smokeless powder cartridges, including .30-30 Winchester as seen here. Manufactured in 1897, this Antique example is in Very Good condition given its nearly 125 years of existence. Please see our photos and good luck!
