Trigger Group: “D28290-12-SA”- A Springfield part (page 90 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).
Hammer: “C46008-3 SA”– A Springfield part (page 98).
Safety: Unmarked – The marking may have been lost to refinishing (page 103).
Follower: Unmarked – Used by all 4 manufacturers (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “0 7 5 D” and “D 28291 34” – Correct for the Springfield serial number (page 29).
Op Rod: “6535382 SA” – A Springfield part (page 71).
Barrel: “7.62 NATO”, “M11” and “S-A-10-51” – A Springfield part (page 63 – 64). The “7.62 NATO” marking is not consistent with Military markings for a “Navy Garand” chambered in 7.62 NATO (pages 212 – 215).
Bolt: “D28287-12SA / S-A1 diamond” – A Springfield part (page 53).
The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “DRC”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “SA” on the edge.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The refinsihed buttplate has surface erosion showing through the finish. The wood shows various scuffs, light scrapes and other light handling marks. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fine Plus overall condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Rebuild

Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are light grey. The rifling is deep. There is frosting & fouling in the grooves and at the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 2.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. Surface erosion shows through the finish on the bottom metal. The metal shows various scrapes & small scratches. The underside of the receiver and the area ahead of the rear sight show small areas of thinning. The right side of the receiver shows thinning from cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This WWII Springfield Armory M1 Garand was made back in 1944. It has been rebuilt using all Springfield parts. The rifle was converted to fire .308 Winchester during the rebuild. The conversion does not appear to have been done by the Military as the markings are not consistent with a Military conversion.
