Markings: The stop of the barrel is marked with a Ruger warning and “STURM, RUGER & CO. INC., SOUTHPORT, CONN U.S.A.”. The left side of the barrel is marked with “7mm REM. MAG.” and a Ruger proof mark. The top of the receiver is marked “RUGER / No. 1”. The underside left of the receiver is marked with the serial number “131-460099”. The grip cap and buttpad are marked with a Ruger logo.

Sights/Optics: The barrel has a rib that is drilled, tapped, filled, and cut for Ruger rings which have installed Leupold Vari-X-III 3.5-10x scope with a duplex reticle. The eyepiece bell shows a cluster of light nicks on the top and the ??. The objective lens glass is fairly clear, but the ocular lens shows light scratches. Overall, the scope is in Very Good condition.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a two-piece smooth wood with checkered pistol grip, checkered beavertail forend, fluted straight comb, and orange rubber buttpad. There are sling studs on the buttstock and forend. The buttstock shows scattered light nicks and scuffs, most notable on the comb and lower left. The right side of the grip shows thinning in the finish and a few light nicks. The forend shows light edge-thinning, scattered light nicks, and a few light dings on the underside. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP is 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The buttpad shows light handling marks with some discoloration. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good-plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion, but there is stubborn fouling throughout.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 68% of its metal finish. The receiver, trigger assembly, barrel rib, Ruger rings, and roughly 1/3 of the barrel show light-to-moderate surface oxidation. The remainder of the barrel shows a few light scuffs and nicks along the top with a few areas having gone to a light patina. The screws show light tool marks and strong slots, and all markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Good-Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Ruger No. 1 was introduced in 1967 and at first blush seems an odd design choice for a modern rifle. Repeating rifles of many different designs had become the norm by the late ’60s and the single shot—certainly the falling-block single-shot—was on the outs with most hunters and target shooters. The brilliant success of the Ruger No. 1 comes from its embodiment of Ruger’s design philosophy: simple, durable, reliable. It has been chambered in nearly 50 different cartridges and continues to be manufactured and sold to this day. This example is in Very Good condition, chambered for the 7mm Remington Magnum cartridge and sports a Leupold Vari-X-III 3.5-10x scope.
