Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “-WINCHESTER- / -TRADE MARK-“, “-MODEL 42-410-3 IN. CHAM.- / MADE IN U.S.A.-WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-” and “IMP. CYL.”. The top of the barrel at the rear and the top of the receiver at the front each have an ovalled “WP” proof. The bottom of the receiver extension and receiver are both marked “128170”. The bottom of the magazine tube and the bottom of the receiver extension are marked with opposing arrow indexing marks. The left of the trigger guard has an inspector’s mark.

Sights / Optics: There is a silver-colored bead at the muzzle. The top of the receiver is serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece walnut with a post-war slide handle with grooved sides, flat-bottom pistol grip, straight comb and checkered black hard rubber Winchester buttplate. The stocks have a few scattered minor nicks and scuffs. There is a repaired chip-loss at the toe which is fairly thin, about 4″ long and is most notable at the point of the loss in the belly. The repair was well done, going unnoticed except with bright light. The LOP measures 13 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has minor wear around the edges with sharp checkering and lettering. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine condition as repaired.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. There are a few spots of minor erosion in the bore at the muzzle-end.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The finish is lightly thinning at some edges. There are a few scattered light nicks and scuffs, most notable on the left receiver flat. There are light tool marks around the sideplate screw heads. The action shows operational wear including on the sides of the barrel from the slide handle. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Very Good-Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage post-war Winchester Model 42 standard grade .410 bore pump action shotgun from 1953. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin the Model 12. It is in Very Good-Fine condition, having a repair at the toe of the buttstock, but otherwise showing light and responsible use. The shotgun retains a nice bore and strong mechanics. It would make a fine addition to any collection, especially if you have a new generation of shooters to train. Please see our photos and good luck!
