Model: .22 LR Conversion of a SMLE III* (Short Magazine Lee Enfield Mark III*). Later designated as the No1 MkIII.
This is a modern conversion of a Military rifle. This rifle was not originally a .22 Training Rifle.
Serial Number: T1917
Year of Manufacture: 1942. Modern Conversion.
Caliber: .22 LR (.22 Long Rifle). Originally .303 British
Action Type: Single Shot Bolt Action. The detachable magazine functions as a shell catcher. There are no internal parts in the magazine.
Markings: The import mark on the right rear of the receiver is illegible. The right of the stock collar is marked “MA / LITHGOW / S.M.L.E. / III* / 1942”. The right front of the receiver, rear of the bolt handle and face of the nosecap are each marked with the serial number. The left side of the receiver is marked with a “crown / L / crossed flags / P” proof. The rear of the receiver and barrel band are each marked with an Australian “A inside a seven pointed star” stamping. The bottom of the nosecap and bottom of the trigger guard are each marked “BA”. The top of the buttplate and left rear sight wing are each marked “OA”. The bolt head is marked “22 No2” and “MA46”. The safety is marked “III”. There are a few other small stampings on the metal parts. The bottom of the grip and the wood ahead of the magazine well are marked with inspection stamps that include “crowns”. The bottom of the forearm is marked “B” and “SLAZ / 43”.
Barrel Length: Approximately 25 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post set atop a ramped base and between protective sight wings. The original (for .303) rear of sight has a flat top with a “U” groove. The riser of the sight is marked from “2-20”. The rear sight also has protective wings. The adjustment can be performed with gross-adjustment by pushing in on the left of the slider and moving the slider or with the worm-screw on the right of the slider for fine-adjustment.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a straight grip with finger groove, barrel band, nosecap assembly with sight wings & bayonet lug, 2 sling loops and a brass buttplate with hinged door for storage. A plastic oiler is stored in the butt. The buttplate shows scratches & oxidation. The wood shows scrapes, scuffs, and a few scratches. The most prominent marks are on the right side of the grip. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright. The rifling is crisp. There is no visible erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its current metal finish. The metal shows scrapes and small scratches. The inside of the ejection port shows a patch of light surface erosion. The screw heads show use. The markings are defined. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle has a black plastic oiler stored in the butt. The cap has a dripper attached. There is no oil. It shows scrapes, scratches, and oil residue. It is in about Very Good condition. The rifle comes with a magazine hull. There are no internal parts. It acts as a brass catcher. It shows scrapes and is in about Very Good Plus condition in its current “incomplete” state.
