Markings: The import mark is located on the barrel flat, under the wood. It is in small text and partially struck. It is illegible. It is stamped over several inspection stamps. The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. CARBINE / CAL. 30 M1” on the front and “INLAND DIV. / 5530744” on the rear. The top of the barrel is marked “INLAND MFG. DIV. / GENERAL MOTORS / 9 – 44” and “P”. The right rear of the trigger group is marked “INLAND” which is an Inland mark (page 78 of Craig Riesch’s book, U.S. M1 Carbines Wartime Production 7th Edition). The hammer is marked with a “NI” which is an Inland mark (page 89). The magazine release is marked “WA / M” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (pages 100-101 & 184). The rotary button safety is marked “circled S” which is a post WWII rebuild mark (pages 93 & 184). The operating slide is unmarked. The marking may have been lost to efinishing (page 65). The bolt is marked “2” (production mark) and “AI” on the left lug which is an Inland mark (page 36). The front sight is marked “N” which is consistent with Inland and others (page 56). The Type II rear sight is marked “HI” which is an Inland mark (page 29). The Type III barrel band is marked “MMQ” on the band and “EM-Q” on the lug which are Quality Hardware marks (page 59). The rear of the magazine is marked “IS” which is a Standard Products mark (page 142-143).
Barrel Length: Approximately 18 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a post set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable Type II aperture assembly.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock has a pistol grip, Type III barrel band with sling loop & bayonet lug, sling well, sling pass through, and a metal buttplate. The top of the grip shows a small repaired crack. A nail head used for the repair is visible. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratch & compression marks. Several have damaged small portions of the surface of the wood. Most of these marks have been finished over. The LOP measures 13 ¼ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition.
Type of Finish: Gun Paint (DuraCoat?)
Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. The grooves near the muzzle are light grey. The rifling is sharp. There is fouling and erosion in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up some. The bore shows an M.E. of 2.7.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish as refinished. Scratches show through the finish. The metal shows scuffs & light handling marks. The trigger guard also shows scratches. The bolt and right side of the receiver show light thinning consistent with cycling. The barrel markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition as refinished.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle has a green canvas sling attached. The metal shows scrapes. It is in about Fine condition. The rifle comes with a 15 round magazine. It shows scrapes and thin scratches. It is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
The magazine is not available to residents of California or any state with magazine capacity restrictions.
