Follower: “12” – A Springfield part (page 83).
Receiver Leg: “D 28291-2W.R.A.” and “TE / 9-65” (electric pencil) –Correct for serial number (not listed on page 29. See page 757 of Bruce Canfield’s book, The M1 Garand Rifle). A September, 1965 Tooele Army Depot (TE) rebuild.
Op Rod: “6535362 HRA.” – A     Harrington and Richardson part (page 71).

The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “DRC”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “WC E”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The face of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof.
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. Cleaning tools are stored in the butt. The buttplate shows scrapes, scratches, thinning, and pin prick surface erosion. The wood shows scrapes, light scratches, and compression marks. The most prominent marks are below the left side of the receiver. The LOP measures 13 ? inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Arsenal Rebuild

Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are light grey. The rifling is deep. There is fouling in the grooves.There is frosting in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up a bit. The bore shows an M.E. of 1.9. The throat shows a T.E. of 3.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. Scratches and small dings in the metal show through the new finish. The op rod shows scratches. The barrel & gas tube show scrapes and small scratches. The metal shows other light scrapes & handling marks as well as areas of discoloration. The screw heads show use. The markings are well defined. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle has cleaning tools stored in the butt. A green nylon case holds a 4 piece cleaning rod, loop, & brush. The bottom of the case is torn and the case is soiled. It is in Fair condition. The cleaning rod, loop & brush are in about Very Good condition. A Type 2 plastic oiler contains an oil chamber & dropper on one side and holds an M10 combination tool on the other side. The oiler shows discoloration & scratches. It is in about Very Good condition. The combo tool is in about Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This Rare Winchester M1 Garand is a “First Contract” Winchester. It was part of the first 65,000 M1 Garands delivered to the Military. In 1965 the rifle was rebuilt at the Tooele Army Depot. The “TE / 9 – 65” markings on the receiver leg are specific to Tooele Army Depot rebuilt rifles with variations on the date.
