Trigger Group: “D28290-12-SA”- A Springfield part (page 89 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).

Hammer: “C-46008-1 W.R.A.”– A Winchester part (page 99).

Safety: Unmarked with a round top – The marking may have been lost to refinishing (page 104).

Follower: unmarked – Used by all manufacturers (page 83).

Receiver Leg: “D-6528291” – Correct for a 1953 H&R M1 Garand (page 29).

Op Rod: “D-653582IHC”– An international Harvester part (page 71).

Bolt: “D28287-19SA / A-9” – A Springfield part (page 52).

Barrel:”W”,  “HRA 6535448 12-53 RS25”, “M”, “P” and with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp – Correct for and H&R M1 (page 63).

The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and with a small “W in a hexagon”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “NI C” on the edge.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The left side of the buttstock is marked “R.R.A.” near the grip. This is an Arsenal Rebuild stamp from the Red River Arsenal (page 135). The face of the grip is marked with a “boxed P” proof. The base of the grip is marked with a small “crossed cannons” stamping.

The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nosecaps, stacking loop, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged metal door for storage in the buttstock. The buttplate shows scrapes, scratches, thinning, and some ink residue. The left side of the front handguard shows filled surface repairs. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches, and compression marks. Many of the marks have damaged small portions of the surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over.  The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition as refurbished.

Type of Finish: Parkerized

Finish Originality: Original to Arsenal Rebuild

Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright. The grooves near the muzzle are light grey. The rifling is deep. There is fouling and frosting in the grooves near the muzzle. The fouling should clean up a bit. The bore has an M.E. of 2.5. The throat has a T.E. of 3.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 97% of its current metal finish. The metal has small scratches and small spots of oxidation showing through the finish. The trigger group has surface erosion & pitting showing through the finish. The front of the gas tube shows scrapes & thinning. The left side of the receiver shows a scratch. The right side of the receiver and bolt show some thinning from cycling. The bottom metal shows a few thin scratches. The metal shows other scuffs & handling marks. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle was purchased through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). It comes with a CMP Certificate, CMP shipping invoice, with 2 manuals, and with its original long term storage bag (white bag). The white bag, certificate, and invoice are all marked with the rifle’s serial number. The white bag serial number is written in marker ink. The white bage is dated “AUG 1970”. Its markings include “PROTECTIVE COATINGS CORP. / 8-70 / MIL-B-40028”.  The invoice and certificate are dated 9-3-98. The white bag shows creasing, discoloration, and a small tear. The nose of the bag is stapled together. Overall it is in about Very Good condition. The certificate, invoice, and manuals show some creasing. They are in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.  Please see photos.
