Our Assessment: One of the most successful, and certainly one of the most famous Winchester rifles was the Winchester Model 1873, known as “The Gun that Won the West” for its predominant role in the hands of Western settlers. The Model 1873 had a steel frame that was much stronger than the brass framed Model 1866, allowing Winchester to develop a family of powerful new cartridges, with Colt usually producing Single Action Army revolvers in the same calibers shortly after they were developed. The .44-40 Win. cartridge, also known as the .44 WCF, was introduced by Winchester in 1873 as Winchester’s first metallic centerfire cartridge with a number of WCF cartridges to follow. While the 1873 was discontinued in the early 1900s, the design was brought back by the Italian company Uberti and was popular enough that Winchester re-introduced it in 2013. This example is one of the newer models, produced in 2018, but still chambered for the classic .44-40 WCF cartridge. With beautiful stocks, vibrant case-color, a bright bore and strong mechanics, this rifle would make a wonderful addition to a Winchester collection as an example of what an original would have looked like when brand-new. Of course, it will also be a great rifle for recreational target shooting or competition in Cowboy Action Shooting. Please see our photos and good luck!
