Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “STURM, RUGER & CO., INC. / SOUTHPORT, CONN. U.S.A.”. The left of the frame is marked “RUGER BLACKHAWK / .41 MAGNUM CAL.” followed by the company logo, the right has the serial number. The front face of the cylinder is marked “S”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade integral to a base fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch in a base that is pinned to the top strap and is adjustable for windage and elevation. The rear sight is protected by ears.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth wood panels with black-on-silver Ruger medallions at their tops. The grips show a few light compressions and a small impact mark or two. The most noticeable defect is on the left side panel. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 96% of its metal finish. The barrel has a spot of finish wear on the left at the muzzle and there are a few scattered minor marks that are almost invisible. The grip frame has a few light rubs and scuffs the trigger guard and mottled discoloration on the butt. The ejector rod housing has some nicks and small patches of finish loss. The cylinder has a complete turn-line through the finish and a few little nicks and some thinning on the edges. The frame has a few little marks from handling and light use. The hammer has some tiny freckles of very faint discoloration from previous oxidation. The screw heads are sharp. The pinheads are unmarred. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder has good lockup on all chambers with only very little play. There is no transfer bar. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Ruger Blackhawk has long been praised as one of the strongest actions ever made for a single-action revolver and this Pre-Warning “Old Model”, chambered for .41 Remington Magnum and made in 1967 is no exception. It is in about Fine condition with some very light wear, a bright bore with sharp rifling and strong mechanics. This one is from before the lawyers made the warnings and transfer bars mandatory and is an unmolested three-screw with no transfer bar and no warning! If you’re a Ruger fan drop a bid, this is seriously clean!!! The .41 Rem. Mag. was conceived by Elmer Keith and was originally intended for hunting and law enforcement use. He envisioned two different loads: a hot load for hunting and a milder police load. Unfortunately, Remington fell into the bigger is better philosophy, or in this case, faster is better, and released a hot load at 1500 fps and a somewhat milder 210 grain police load at 1150 fps instead of the 200 grain load at 900 fps that Keith proposed. As a result, the police regarded the .41 Mag. as overpowered and the caliber never caught on the same way that the .357 and .44 Magnum cartridges did. With its high condition and less-common chambering, this would be a great addition to a Ruger collection. It would also make a great hunting or fishing sidearm or recreational shooter.
