Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45”. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The underside of the frame at the grip frame is marked with the serial number. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with a “VP” in a triangle and at the rear with “B”. The factory engraved panel scenes depict an East meets West theme with an Indian teepee on the left side of the frame and a covered wagon on the right. The remainder of the revolver is embellished with Class C Expert level scroll engraving by John Adams. The left grip panel is scrimshawed, with “END OF TRAIL / 1999” in a banner under an Indian on a horse. This is all confirmed by the Factory letter.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a quarter round blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square groove in the top strap.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 99% of its metal finish. There are thin marks from storage only… The gun is probably unfired and maybe even unturned… The cylinder lacks a defined drag line but for light marks at the cuts – probably from the factory… The revolver has beautiful metal to metal fit and the Brushed Nickel is simply beautiful and VERY rarely seen. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver or even cock it…

Our Assessment: “The Colt Frontier or Frontier Six-Shooter was a Colt’s 1873 “Model P” type revolver, manufactured in .44-40 Winchester caliber instead of .45 Colt (in which configuration it was called the Single Action Army), so as to be compatible with Winchester Model 73 ammunition. Production began in 1877. Colt Frontier Six-Shooter was the actual name of the Colt pistol model, and this was acid-etched on the left side of the barrel. After 1889, the legend was roll-stamped until 1919, when the caliber designation “.44-40” was added. Later Colt 1878 Double Action Army Models also wore this designation on the barrel when chambered in 44 WCF/44-40 Winchester. The Bisley 1895 Model was the final Colt to wear the Frontier Six Shooter designation.
Users of the .44-40 Winchester cartridge in the Far West appreciated the convenience of being able to carry a single caliber of ammunition which they could fire in both revolver and rifle. The Colt Frontier Six Shooter Revolver and the Winchester Model 1873 or the Winchester Model 1892 in .44-40 WCF caliber were one of the most common combinations seen in “the Old West”. For example, the two mounted “Cowboys” at the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral were armed with this rifle and pistol combination. Single Action Colts in calibers 38-40 (38WCF) and 32-20 (32WCF) also qualify as “Frontier Calibers” because 1873 and 1892 Winchesters were made in these calibers, offering the same convenience as the 44-40 (44WCF) caliber, namely using the same cartridge in both revolver and rifle.” (wikipedia)
This is a very nice, very rare and Factory Engraved example of the Single Action Army. It was made for the 1999 SASS End of Trail World Championship and is a gun that is worthy of a World Championship. John Adams is a famous engraver, for good reason… His work is incredible and this revolver must have meant something to him because it seems even better than his average work!
