Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece serrated walnut panels. The grips show minor handling wear with only a few small marks and well defined serrations. There are no chips or cracks. The left panel’s screw escutcheon is not properly held in place, turning with the screw head when the screw is removed. Overall, the grips are in about Fine condition as not original to the gun.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Refinished, the sear is not original to the gun.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray, darker in the grooves. The rifling shows heavy wear, barely visible. There is light-moderate erosion throughout the bore.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 87% of its current metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is some scattered minor oxidation and infrequent patches of light surface erosion. The sides of the grip frame have more notable erosion and pitting which is mostly concealed by the grips when installed. There are some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches with a patch of wear on the front of the magazine well. The action shows operational wear. The screw head is lightly tool marked with a strong slot. The markings are generally clear, some are worn, but legible. Overall, this pistol is in about Good condition as refinished.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a wood stock/holster, leather harness and cleaning rod. The mounting bracket is marked “637729”, based on the fit of the bracket to the wood the wood has either been refinished or is not original to the bracket. There are a couple of cracks in the left-front edge of the wrist and a repaired chip-loss in the right-front at the top. Otherwise, the stock/holster shows fairly minor wear. The leather harness appears to be a reproduction (as does the cleaning rod), showing fairly minor wear with intact stitching.

Our Assessment: The Broomhandle Model 1896 Mauser is certainly an interesting looking firearm. Its features are the most distinctive of any other pistol. In addition to being popularized in Soviet films as the iconic weapon of the Russian revolution and civil war, it was even used as a basis for futuristic weapons like the blaster used by Han Solo in Star Wars. This pistol is a Post-War Bolo. It has been refinished, so it looks great for its age. The gun is in pretty good shape overall apart from the bore, though the bore condition is somewhat typical considering the history of these pistols, many of which were used in China and Russia during their conflicts in the early 20th Century. The serialized parts match with the exception of the sear, though the included stock/holster does not. This pistol should appeal to anyone who always wanted to own a Broomhandle, and for the collectors this is a neat example of the Post-War Bolo. Please see our photos and good luck!
