Barrel Length: 242”

Sights/Optics: There is no provision for iron sights on this rifle. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped. The receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled with two-piece rails that have attached optic rings that have mounted on them a Nikon 3-9×40 scope with a duplex reticle. The scope is free of any notable wear or damage—only minor handling wear is apparent—and the glass is fairly clear. Overall, the scope is in Fine condition.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered wood with black-capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb with cheek piece, and an orange rubber buttpad. There are sling studs on the belly of the buttstock and the underside of the forend. A few minor compressions dot the left side of the forend at the upper edge; there are a few spots where the checkering is lightly worn down; there is a cluster of minor nicks/scuffs on the right side of the buttstock. The checkering is otherwise quite sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP is 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The buttpad has staining from handling and use throughout. Overall, the stock is in Fine-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion, but minor stubborn fouling persists in spots down the length of the bore.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 97% of its finish. There is a small spot of finish loss on the tip of the barrel. There are minor hairline nicks/scuffs on the magazine floorplate. The machine-jeweled bolt has minor operational wear. The markings are clear. The screwheads are sharp. Overall, the rifle is in Fine-plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the push-feed bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is fully engaged, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, only the trigger is blocked. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box Paperwork and Accessories: This Model 70 Classic Sporter includes the Nikon scope as described above.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years. It is reliable, robust, and accurate, it is for many the rifle by which all bolt action rifles are measured. This example is the Classic Sporter variant made in 1982 as Winchester was coming fully out of its fallow period. Efforts were made to set things back to rights when it came to the Model 70 and the classic series saw the return of the lauded control-feed bolt and cut checkering as opposed to pressed. Overall build quality is improved, and the perceived cheapness of post-64 rifles is done away with. Chambered in .270 Winchester and equipped with a more than decent Nikon scope, the lucky winner will have a fine deer rifle. Good luck and happy bidding!
