Sights/Optics: There is no provision for iron sights on this rifle. The receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled for mounting a rear sight (none installed). The receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled with two-piece Weaver rails which have attached Zeiss Diavari 3-9×36 scope with minor scuff wear mainly on the eyepiece bell. The glass is fairly clear and overall, the scope rates in Very Good condition.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a replacement one-piece checkered fiberglass with pistol grip, fluted straight comb with cheek piece, a black rubber buttpad and QD sling swivels mounted front and rear. The stock has only scattered minor nicks belly and the edge of the cheek piece. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is well-defined. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The buttpad is free of any notable wear or damage. Overall, the stock rates in Fine condition, as not original to the gun.

Type of Finish: Blue

Bore Condition: The bore is rather bright with sharp rifling. There are a few spots of minor stubborn fouling scattered about, but mainly at the muzzle end.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The action has very minor operational wear. There is interruption and scuffing on the receiver where the markings have been removed. The screw heads are sharp with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: The scope as described above and a black nylon sling.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 manufactured in 1955. The stock and barrel have been replaced, and all Winchester markings have been removed. The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling and only a scant amount of erosion and minor fouling. The rifle has provision for just about any kind of sighting system you would want to install. Presently, the rifle is fitted with a Zeiss Diavari 3-9×36 scope. The pre-64 Winchester Model 70 actions are prized by shooters and collectors alike for their smoothness and reliability, and this one is no exception. Chambered in the proprietary .280 Remington, a less well-known and seemingly unpopular contemporary of more notable cartridges like .270 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor. Regardless, the cartridge does have its adherents, and online scuttlebutt purports to say that .280 outperforms those above-mentioned cartridges. In its condition, this rifle will make a great addition to any Model 70 collection. Good luck and happy bidding!
