Markings: The import mark on the bottom of the barrel reads “C.A.I. GEORGIA VT. / NO.4 MK1 .303 UK”. The left side of the stock collar is marked “M47C” (the code for BSA Shirley), “1944”, with the serial number, and “TR” (the final inspection proof prior to being upgraded to a sniper by Holland & Holland). The left side of the receiver is marked “No.4 Mk.I” (faded) and “T” (signifying a No.32 telescope had been fitted, and the combination had met all inspections). The top of the receiver is marked with an “asterisk” inspection stamp. The rear of the receiver is marked with 2 inspection stamps. The rear of the bolt handle, underside of the forearm and bottom of the magazine (next to “crossed out numbers) are each marked with the serial number. The bolt head is marked with “crossed flags” and “M47C”. The front of the magazine well is marked with a faded “M/47C” stamp. The front barrel band is marked “N79”. The belly of the stock and bottom of the grip are each marked with faded or partial stampings. The bottom of the butt is marked “S51” which is a Holland & Holland mark. This mark appears to have been restamped as it is stamped over faded markings. The top of the grip is marked with partial “numbers” stamped over faded “numbers”. These numbers do not match either the rifle or scope serial numbers. There are a few other small markings on the rifle.
The No.32 scope is marked “TEL.STG.NO32 MK3 / OS.2039A. CT&S No 20172”, “B” in blue paint and “W” in red paint. The side of the scope base is marked “M36931”. The scope base and rings are marked with matching assembly numbers. They are marked “W189 / W189” and “W190 / W190”.
The front of the wood chest is marked in white paint “CHEST S.A. No.1.5. Mk.I” and “TEL SGT MKI”.

Barrel Length: Approximately 25 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective ears. The rear flip up sight ladder uses a fixed aperture in the down position. The ladder is marked from “2 – 13”. The fixed aperture will need to be removed in order to mount the scope.
The left side of the receiver has two threaded holes for accepting the scope base that is attached to the scope. The scope is a fixed 3 power with a post reticle. Most of the glass lens view is clear. The edges of the view show small black flecks. The adjustment knobs turn. The refinished scope tube has surface erosion showing through the finish. The tube and knobs show scrapes & scratches. The front of the tube also shows small dents and light thinning. The mounting screws are integral to the base. The base, oversized screw heads and rings show scrapes & scratches. Overall the scope assembly is in about Very Good Plus condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The hardwood stock has a straight grip, raised cheek piece, serrated upper handguard, nose caps, two barrel bands, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage. The refinished buttplate has scratches and surface erosion showing through the finish. The raised cheek piece is secured by two screws. The top & bottom of the butt show repairs at the buttplate. The rear handguard shows a repaired crack. The wood shows scrapes, scratches and compression marks which have been oiled over. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus overall condition as refurbished.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The lands are bright, the grooves are light grey and the rifling is deep. There is fouling in the grooves which should clean up some. There is no visible erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its current metal finish as refinished. The stock collar has some paint residue on it. The metal shows scuffs, scrapes & small scratches. The screw heads show heavy use. Some of the receiver markings are faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition, as refinished.

Mechanics: Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a No 32 scope assembly; see above. The rifle comes with a refinished 10-round magazine that has oxidation showing through the new finish. It also shows scrapes & scratches. Overall it is in about Very Good Plus condition. The rifle, scope assembly and magazine are stored in a green reproduction wooden chest. The chest has metal hinges, metal latches, interior leather attachments and two leather straps for carrying. The wood inside the case holds the rifle in position. It uses wooden inserts to do this. The top & bottom inserts are covered in felt. The top inserts are secured by wire so they will ot be lost. The exterior of the case shows scrapes, scuffs and some discoloration. Overall the case is in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition. The case also contains copies & paperwork that list details of the rifle & scope.

Our Assessment: This Enfield No.4 Mk1 T Sniper Rifle started out as an Enfield No.4 Mk1 made at BSA Shirley during WWII. It was selected for its inherent accuracy and then upgraded to sniper configuration by Holland & Holland. The rifle has been refurbished. A new rear sight was added during the refurbishment. The aperture will need to be ground down in order to mount the scope. The rifle comes with a refurbished No. 32 scope that is in great shape. The consignor advises that the scope was refurbished by Vickers. The rifle and scope are held in a new reproduction wood crate. This is a nice package that will add to your collection.
