Markings: The lockplate is marked “1858” behind the hammer and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” in front of the primer door. The primer door has an American Eagle. The top-rear of the barrel is marked “1858”, the left shoulder has “V / P” and eagle’s head. The tang of the buttplate is marked “U.S.”. Each of the barrel bands is marked “U”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade integral to a rectangular base. The front sight also serves as the bayonet lug (no bayonet included). The rear of the barrel has a dovetail and a drilled and tapped hole for a rear sight which is not present.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece smooth walnut with brass nosecap, three barrel bands, sling swivel on the front of the trigger guard (the middle band had a swivel, but it has broken off) and smooth iron buttplate. The stock has scattered nicks, dings, bruises, scrapes and scratches. There are scattered spots and areas of discoloration. There are some minor losses along edges with more notable losses on the edges of the ramrod slot between the front band and nosecap. There is a hole on the bottom to the right of the trigger guard. There are cracks at the right shoulder of the buttplate, the front of the lockplate and in front of the rear lockplate mounting screw. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has wear mottled with a thick, dark patina. Overall, the stock is in about Good-plus condition as refinished Antique.

Type of Finish: Originally finished Bright

Finish Originality: We see no signs of a new finish being applied.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray with sharp rifling. There is light erosion throughout the bore with scattered spots of more moderate erosion and some pitting.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 0% of its metal finish. The metal surfaces have gone to a light-moderate patina. There is scattered light surface erosion with some nicks and scratches. The nipple is in surprisingly good shape and the flash-hole is not obstructed. The markings are generally clear, the barrel markings are slightly obscured by erosion. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a tulip-tipped ramrod with a swell in the front of the shank, stored under the barrel. The rod shows similar patina to the rifle, in about Very Good condition.
