Markings: The top of the breechblock is marked “U S / MODEL / 1884”. The right side plate is marked with a shielded eagle holding arrows and “U S / SPRINGFIELD”. The top rear of the barrel is marked “A”. The top of the barrel sloping into the left is marked with “V / P” and an eagle head at the rear. The top rear of the receiver is marked “419374”. The top of the buttplate in front of the mounting screw is marked “U S”. The left side both barrel bands are marked “U”. The bottom of the wrist is marked with a circle “P” cartouche and the left side of the wrist is marked with a boxed “SWP / 1888” cartouche.

Barrel Length: The barrel is 32 1/2” in length.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a short blade pinned to a rectangular base on the barrel. The rear sight is a Buffington ladder sight that was used on the M1884 rifles. There is a “U” notch sight fixed to the rear of the ladder for use as a battle sight when the ladder is folded down. The base of the sight is adjustable for windage. The right side of the ladder is marked from “2-14”, with a hash line every 25 yards. The top right corner of the ladder is marked “R”. The left side of the ladder is marked “15-20” with a hash line every 50 yards. There are four different sights for use when the ladder is raised: there is a small peep sight at the bottom of the slider for use as a battle sight, a “U” notch in the base of a triangle for use from 200-1400 yards, a peep near the top of the slider for use at 1400 yards, and a “U” notch at the very top of the slider for use from 1500-2000.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece walnut with a smooth straight grip. The buttstock has a blue steel carbine style buttplate. The forend has a hole for the included cleaning rod. There are two barrel bands and the front barrel band has sling and stacking loops, there is another sling loop mounted in the front of the trigger guard. There are some scattered dings, light scrapes, and a few compressions. The most noticeable defects are on the buttstock and on the right side of the stock in front of the rear barrel band. There is a small chip loss on the toe at the buttplate and there is also light material loss in front of the trigger guard. There is a chip loss repair to the left of the top tang. The comb is 10 ½” in length and the LOP measures approximately 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows some finish loss, scratches, light erosion, and some light surface oxidation. The buttplate is in about Very Good condition. The stock rates in about Fine condition.

Finish Originality: Partially Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is gray with worn but pronounced rifling. There is some infrequently scattered erosion and a few pits.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its metal finish. There are scattered spots of light oxidation and some mottled discoloration on the lockplate and hammer. The breechblock and receiver have some thinning, patches of oxidation, and some spots of dark discoloration from previous oxidation. The barrel has some mottled patina and some scattered spots of light oxidation. The barrel has some spots of thinning and some scratches from abrasive cleaning, most noticeable at the front near the muzzle. There are some erosion and discoloration on the barrel mainly at the front. The barrel has some little nicks and dings. The trigger guard assembly has scattered dings, scratches, and some small spots of surface oxidation. The hammer knurling shows light wear but is still strong. The screwheads show use with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has quarter and half cock safety positions. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
