Our Assessment: The venerable M2 Machine gun is one of John Browning’s most iconic creations, but it was not his only machine gun. The M2 had smaller siblings, the M1917 and M1919 .30 caliber machine guns. This particular rifle is based off of the latter of the two, the M1919 machine gun, which served as the mainstay light machine gun for American forces during World War II. After the war, the M1919s began to be phased out of the US roster and found their way into the hands of several of our allies. One subgroup of these hand-me-down guns were the M1919A4 variants of the rifle, which ended up in the hands of the newly christened Israeli Defense Forces. The Israelis would rechamber the weapon into 7.62 NATO rounds, and the M1919A4s would fill a crucial role as a support weapon until being finally phased out. The parts would find their way back home to the United States, where Saginaw Arms reforged them into M1919A7s, semi-automatic variants of the platform for the civilian market. This A7 has been paired with an original tripod and a full belt of dummy rounds for display purposes. It would serve as an incredible display piece, with a long history full of exciting stories. Or, with a little love, care, and attention you could have a truly iconic piece to take to your range day and have fun with. Will you become a part of this iconic firearm’s tapestry of history?
