Our Assessment: Oh la la! A mil-surplus that some might call the ugly step-sister of the M1 Garand or M1 Carbine, this rifle offers flexibility with its lightweight build, ability to take detachable magazines, and rifle grenade launcher. The MAS 49/56 was adopted in 1957, and over 275,000 units were produced until the model was replaced by the bullpup FAMAS in 1978. Don’t discount this Cold War era semi-auto rifle! These are sturdy, versatile, and easy to maintain in less-than-stellar environments, which are three key things gun owners want in their firearms and three things that the MAS MLE 49/56 offers. Whether you’re a military historian buff, reenactor, or just a firearms fanatic, don’t miss this chance to add this MAS 49/56 to your collection!
