Year of Manufacture: According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd Edition, Page 70, 77,155 were made between 1861-1874, putting the DOM around 1862, though exact serial numbers in this rage are not known for dating 100%.

Action Type: 6-Shot, Single Action, Tip-Up Revolver
Markings: The barrel rib is marked “SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” The rear face of the barrel at the breech, left of the grip frame and front of the cylinder are marked with assembly number “103”. The cylinder is marked “PATENTED APRIL 3, 1855, JULY 5, 1859 & DEC. 18, 1860”. The inside of the right grip panel and butt of the grip frame have matching serial number “10594”.
Barrel Length: 6”, Octaongal
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a half-moon rounded blade, appearing to be German silver, slotted into the fluted rib of the barrel. The top of the cylinder stop leaf has a “V” notch as a rear sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth rosewood panels with a varnish finish; the finish appears to be original, with areas of scrape and scuff wear; the lower flanks have shaved off material, looking to have been done long ago. The panels have nice fit to the grip frame and are free of visible cracks or major damages. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Finish Originality: The finish is original.
Bore Condition: The bore is dark and the rifling is still defined. There is moderate depth erosion and pitting in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 30% of its metal finish. The pistol’s bluing still remains in light form on the surfaces with stronger presence on the protected areas of the barrel, grip frame and interior of the frame. The surfaces have dark patina and light erosion, with some scattered bruises and what appears to be hand cleaning, done at different intervals throughout history, with no recent cleaning. The frame has spots of deeper erosion, but overall the pistol still looks great for its age, please see our pictures. The barrel hinge screw slot is deformed, the others are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action still functions correctly with nominal side to side play in full lockup and no play in the barrel to frame fit. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson No. 2 began production at the beginning of the American Civil War and is recorded as having been a popular non-issue sidearm for military members. This example was made in about 1862, in .32 Rimfire Long, with a blue finish. The pistol has survived quite well for its potential roll in American history, these items were mostly carried concealed, which attributes to most of the wear on this item; it was probably a cutting edge and trusted sidearm for its original owner, who would have been proud to have it; this will apply to any new owner.
