Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is faintly marked with a Portuguese crest and “1937”. This is a German produced receiver. The top of the receiver is marked “MAUSER” (the Mauser banner). The left side of the receiver is marked “B G U N” with a “crown” over each letter, with the serial number and “STANDARD-MODELL”. The left side of the barrel, next to the receiver is marked with the serial number. The top of the bolt handle is marked the last four digits of the serial number and with “B U” with a “crown” over each letter. The extractor is marked “S/42” (Mauser Oberndorf). The extractor, top rear of the bolt body, the rear of the bolt body, the right side of the safety lever, the top of the bolt release lever and the bottom magazine plate are all marked with the last two digits of the serial number. The tang in front of the magazine floor plate is marked with the serial number. The underside of the sight ladder is marked with the last four digits of the serial number. The bottom rear of the bolt body is marked “S q”.
The base of the bayonets base is marked “S155G” on one side. The other side is marked “6139” and with a script “letter”.
Barrel Length: Approximately 23 ½ Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post on a ramped base. The rear sight is a “V” notched sliding elevator marked from “1-20”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, finger grooves, a metal nosecap with stacking hook, barrel band, hole for the included cleaning rod, through bolt, two sling loops and metal buttplate. The top of the handguard, the magazine well and the left side of the forearm show compression marks. The right side of the butt shows scrapes and compression marks. The wood shows various other scrapes and handling marks. These marks have been oiled. The buttplate, cleaning rod and barrel band retainer show light surface erosion. The LOP measures 13 1/8 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good to Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is deep. There is no visible erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The barrel shows scrapes, small scratches and a few small areas of pin prick surface erosion. The receiver shows light marks. The trigger guard shows a few scrapes and a spot of light surface erosion. The screw heads are intact. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The bayonet locks into place properly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork& Accessories: The rifle comes with a Model M1884/98 III Export bayonet (see http://worldbayonets.com/Bayonet_Identification_Guide/Germany__Post_WW_I_/Germany_1933_1945.html). The bayonet has been chromed. Imperfections on the metal show through the new finish. The grip panels show scrapes and scratches. The screw heads show use. Overall the bayonet rates in about Very Good Plus condition as refinished. The rifle also comes with a brown leather sling that shows creases and some light scrapes. It is in about Fine condition.
Our Assessment: The German Mauser Model 1933 is also designated the Standard Modell Carbine. It is also called a Banner Rifle for the Mauser banner on the receiver. The Standard Modell is almost identical to the German K98 rifle. These were produced prior to WWII and were the forerunner for all later wartime German rifle production. This one has a crisp & deep Mauser banner stamped over a faint, 1937 dated Portuguese crest. Germany produced Mauser receivers for the Portuguese beginning in 1937 and through early WWII. Many of these receivers were kept by the Germans to meet their own production needs. It is not uncommon to see a Nazi marked, Portuguese crested K98. We don’t see Standard Modell rifles much as they are valued by collectors. It is very Rare to see a Standard Modell built on a Portuguese receiver.
