Markings: The underside of the frame is marked “97499”. The top of the barrel is marked “PAUL SHUTTLEWORTH”. The left side of the barrel is marked “.40-70 SS”.
Barrel Length: 28” Half Octagonal
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a glob with a built in level. A 2.5mm peep hole cross hair insert and a 2mm peep hole cross hair insert are both installed. A base for a tang sight is screwed into the tang. Two sets of tapped holes are visible on the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece smooth lacquered pistol grip feature a Schnabel forend and a right handed cheek piece. A cluster of compression marks is visible on the underside of the forend and a smattering of shallow marks is present on the butt stock. The LOP measures 13 ¾” from the front of the forward trigger to the back of the plastic butt plate which displays a Stevens logo and a checkered rear surface. Evidence of use is visible and the butt plate rates in Fine condition. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue Barrel, Case Colored Frame and Lever
Finish Originality: The frame is refinished, the barrel’s finish is factory original.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. A smattering of pinprick surface etching is visible on the frame and a dusting of light handling marks is apparent on the barrel. The case coloring is vivid and has a pattern reminiscent of tiger stripes. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine to Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and features double set triggers. The trigger pull is about 10 lbs without the set trigger activated. The trigger pull is 5.5oz with the set trigger activated. The standard Stevens lever has been replaced with a ‘cowboy’ style finger lever. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: We’re pretty certain that this is a CPA reproduction of a Stevens 44 1/2 target rifle with a Paul Shuttleworth heavy target barrel. It is chambered in .40-70 Straight Sharps. The simple, falling block action is strong and reliable. This rifle features adjustable double set triggers, which yield a feather light 5.5oz trigger pull when activated. This is a very well built rifle with a beautiful case colored frame. With the addition of your favorite sights, this will make you the envy of your range pals.
