Markings: The barrel is marked “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED. OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889, AUGUST 1. 1893.” and “40-65”. The serial number is found on the underside of the frame. The upper tang is marked “MODEL / 1895” and the top of the frame is “MARLIN SAFETY”.

Sights / Optics: The sights are aftermarket. The front sight is a globe sight with a level and an interchangeable reticle leaf. No additional leaves are included. The rear sight has been removed leaving an empty dovetail. The tang sight is a fully adjustable peep aperture with a rotating wheel with different sized peep apertures.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth wood with a capped forearm, straight grip, and straight comb. The buttstock has been modified and is installed with a Decelerator buttpad with four spacers. There is a gap at the end of the comb that the original buttplate installed into. There are scattered dings, scratches, compressions, and scuffs. There is a crack extending from the lower tang through the belly and connects to a small area of material loss on the right side of the buttstock. There is another crack extending from the upper tang to the same spot of material loss on the right. These have been repaired with glue. There is considerable play between the buttstock and receiver. The LOP measures about 13 3/4? & 11 7/8” from the front of the trigger to the end of the buttpad and wood, respectively. The stocks rate in about Fair-Good overall condition as Antique and modified.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is well defined. There is erosion and patches of pitting in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 10% of its metal finish. There is some very faint blue remaining on the barrel. There is scattered erosion and pitting throughout. The magazine tube shows a faint patina. The receiver has worn to white. The screw heads are disfigured yet serviceable, there is a blued screw on the right side of the receiver that seems not to be original to the gun. The markings are legible. Overall, this gun rates in about Good condition as Antique.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a second year production Marlin Model 1895. This rifle has been equipped with aftermarket sights and the buttstock has been cut to fit a decelerator buttpad, interesting modifications for a classic Antique Marlin rifle. Please see our photos and good luck!
