Markings: The left shoulder of the barrel “The Marlin Firearms Co. – EST. 1870 / NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. – MODEL 336 R.C. – 30-30 CAL.”. The right side of the barrel at the receiver is marked with a circled “JM” proof. The lower tang is marked “H53248”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to the top of the barrel. The rear sight is a flat top U-notch elevator sight that is dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver has wavy serrations for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a satin finish, banded forearm, pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a checkered black hard rubber Marlin buttplate. There is an empty hole in the belly where the bullseye once was. There is a small gash on the right side of the buttstock. There is a darkened mark in the wood on the left side of the grip. There are a few other dispersed faint marks. There are no chips or cracks in the wood. The LOP measures 13 3/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate has scattered light wear and the white spacer has receded slightly. The stocks rate in about Very Good-Plus overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There are a few small freckles of erosion near the muzzle. There is an M.E. of 0.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 86% of its metal finish. There is thinning at all leading edges. There is faint surface oxidation on the barrel and mag tube, as well as some on the lever. There are some scattered nicks and scratches that are most notable on the top of the barrel and receiver. The action and hammer has standard operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lever safety is present. The lever locks up tightly and the hammer has a half-cock safety position. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Marlin’s Model 1893 rifle was a direct competitor to the Winchester Model 1894 rifle from 1893 to 1936, when with minor changes to the stock, forearm, and sights, it was re-designated the Model 1936, which changed to M36 shortly thereafter. Compared to the Winchester M1894, it offered side-ejection of fired cartridges, a round breech bolt and a full pistol grip buttstock. In 1948, the Model 36 was replaced with the Model 336, which incorporated the patents of Thomas R. Robinson, a Marlin employee. The Model 336 has been in continuous production until the present day. This rifle is a 1951 vintage Marlin Model 336RC carbine chambered in .30-30. It was made when outstanding quality was the norm in U.S. produced firearms. This rifle will make a great deer rifle and is just right for a saddle gun or for carrying in the back window of your pickup truck. Please see our photos and good luck!
