Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “U.S. / 22 LONG RIFLE / 29082B REMINGTON / MODEL 40-X” The left side of the barrel is marked “WLMX”. The right side of the barrel is marked with 3 proofs. The right side of the rear sight mount is marked “BUEHLER / ORINDA, CAL.” The underside of the bolt is hand scribed “29082”.

Sights / Optics: There are two drilled and tapped holes filled with screws up front and the rear is mounted with a Buehler Redfield style scope mounts. There is also a reverse dovetailed mount on top of the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The one piece stock is smooth walnut with pistol grip. There are compressions throughout. There is a heavier compression on the belly behind the rear sling swivel which removed a bit of wood. There are no cracks. The belly of the forend has an alloy accessory rail. The LOP measures 13 3/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the rubber recoil pad in fine condition. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 92% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows some marks on the barrel and light thinning on the bolt. There are a few very tiny marks of pinprick surface erosion on the barrel. The screw heads are mostly sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and features a nice wide target trigger. We have not fired this rifle.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: A Single Shot Sled is installed.
Our Assessment: This Remington 40 X will make a great target rifle for someone. These were used as training riles for the United States Military. All that is needed are some Redfield style scope mounts and a scope and you will be ready to go.
