Markings: The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked with an inspection mark and “.222 REM” followed by the “DI” date code. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number and “Remington / MODEL 40-X”. The bolt is matched and hand inscribed “48950”. The right side of the chamber is marked with magnaflux, proof, and test marks.

Barrel Length: 27 1/4”

Sights / Optics: The barrel at the muzzle has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes. The barrel towards the rear is installed with a male dovetail base. The chamber ring has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes and the receiver bridge is installed with a male dovetail base. The left of the receiver at the rear has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is smooth walnut with a pistol grip, fluted comb, and with a serrated rubber Whiteline buttpad. The forend is a beavertail with a flat bottom which has an inlaid rail. The top front of the comb is relieved for clearance of the bolt. There are some dings and compressions, most noticeable are on the belly, left of the grip, right side at the very front, and left at about the trigger guard. There are a few little scrapes into the finish, most noticeable on the left of the buttstock. There are some scuffs and rubs, most noticeable behind the inlaid rail. The LOP measures 13 ½” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The buttpad shows light wear from normal use. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is a small spot of erosion in the bore about 8” fom the muzzle.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. The barrel has a few little scuffs and draglines. There are a couple of small spots of discoloration on the left of the barrel at the muzzle. There is some thinning on the front edges of the receiver. There are some tiny freckles of discoloration on the top of the receiver at the front. There are a few light marks on the trigger guard and bolt handle. There is some standard operational wear. The screwheads are sharp to lightly worn with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a handstop installed on the bottom of the rail.

Our Assessment: Introduced in 1962, the Remington 40-X series has been a staple of bench-rest shooting for more than half a century. The Remington Custom Shop produces all of the rifles in this series to ensure superior performance. This example is in Fine condition would make a great rifle for someone looking to get into precision shooting. This one is chambered for .222 Remington which can push bullet weights 40-55 grains from 3,000-3,500 FPS with a nice flat trajectory making this rifle great for varmint hunting in addition to traget shooting.
