Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The right side of the barrel is marked “44 MAGNUM”. The crane cut is marked with the serial number and model number “N777362 / MOD 629”. The crane is marked “84594” with inspection marks. The sideplate has the S&W monogram logo. The right side of the frame, below the cylinder, is marked with the four-line marcas registradas address. The butt is marked with the serial number “N777362”. The left of the grip is marked “84594” with inspection marks and the right side of the grip is marked “7487”, a “T” in a circle and an “S” in a triangle. The right grip has inspection marks.

Barrel Length: 8 3/8”, with shrouded ejector rod and solid rib.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a ramp blade with an orange insert, integral to a serrated elevated base that is integral to the rib, which is serrated for glare reduction. The rear sight is an S&W flat top, square notched and white-outlined leaf that is micrometer click adjustable for windage and elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered wood target stocks that have S&W medallions at the top and leave the serrated backstrap exposed. The left medallion has some discoloration from the deteriorating case material. There are some light handling marks. the finish has wear and is matte likely from the deteriorating interior of the presentation case. The checkering is strong. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are some swirl marks and light streaks from use and storage. There is a turn line on the cylinder. There is light operational wear on the hammer and trigger. There are a few spots of discoloration on the rib. There are a couple minor scuffs and scratches, most noticeable on the cylinder and on the left of the frame above the trigger. The screw heads are sharp to lightly used. The markings are crisp. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup produces minimal side to side movement. The double-action is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a wood presentation case with molded plastic bottom and foam lining, aluminum fluted handle screwdriver, mop, brush, and cleaning rod. The foam material has deteriorated. The case has some scattered scuffs and some light scratches. The appears in Fine condition on the exterior but rates in Very Good condition due to the deteriorated foam.

Our Assessment:  This 629, with its two-piece checkered wood grip and 8 3/8” barrel has been well cared-for, lightly used, and gently handled. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, about 97% of the finish remains and overall, this would make a great addition to any Smith & Wesson collector or general revolver collection.  Please see our photos and good luck!
