Markings: There is no import mark. The gas cylinder lock screw is marked “HRA” which is a Harrington & Richardson part (page 115 of Joe Poyer’s M1 GARAND 1936 to 1957, 6th Edition).

The stock and sight are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice and “HRA-W”. The elevation knob is marked from “2-12” in increments of two and “HR A”.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The face of the grip is marked with a “circled P” proof. The left side of the stock, above the trigger, is marked with a Defense “Eagle” acceptance stamp.
The oil stained hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nosecaps, stacking loop, two sling loops and a metal buttplate with hinged metal door for storage in the buttstock. The buttplate shows scapes, small scratches and a small amount of discoloration from oxidation. The wood shows numerous scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Several have damaged or removed small portions of surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled over. There is some light paint residue on the butt. The LOP measures 13 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. The grooves in the front third of the bore are intermittently semi bright and light grey. The rifling is deep. There is fouling intermittent erosion in the front third of the bore. The bore has an M.E. of 3.2. The throat has a T.E. of 3.

Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 96% of its finish. The gas tube nut has been refinished. The metal shows scuffs, scrapes & light scratches. The gas tube lock screw shows light thinning on the edges. The edges of the trigger guard show light thinning. The right side of the receiver & bolt show light thinning consistent with cycling. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This Harrington & Richardson Arms M1 Garand was made back in 1954. It uses mostly Harrington & Richardson parts so it has lots of little “HRA” markings on the metal. Even the gas cylinder lock screw and rear sights are marked “HRA”. The follower is the only non H&R part. It is marked “11” instead of being unmarked.
