Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “WEATHERBY / SOUTH GATE CALIF.”. The left of the chamber is marked “.300 MAGNUM / WEATHERBY”. The bottom metal is scroll engraved and marked “WEATHERBY CUSTOM”. The base of the bolt handle is marked with a Belgian proof. The bottom of the firing pin lug is marked with a boxed “2”. The right side of the chamber ring is marked with the serial number. The right side of the chamber is marked with an encircled “T”. The bolt body is marked “4860”. The bottom of the forend has a metal inlay marked “C. MILLER III”.

Barrel Length: 24”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed into a finely checkered ramped base screwed to the barrel, it has a slot for a hood (not included). The rear sight is a flip-up “U” notched sight dovetailed into a base on the barrel. The top of the receiver is installed with a one-piece base and rings holding a Weatherby Premier 3-9×40 scope. The scope has a few little nicks and scrapes into the finish with a few spots of light residue. The scope has a fine crosshair and the glass has a bit of haze. The scope rates in about Very Good condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is checkered wood with decorative borders, wood nosecap, wood grip cap with diamond inlay, and wood diamond inlays on the sides and bottom. There is a metal inlay on the bottom. The stock has a pistol grip and monte carlo comb with a cheekpiece. The stock has some little nicks and scratches, the majority are on the forend towards the front and on the cheekpiece. There are a few little scuffs and spots of stubborn residue. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the Weatherby recoil pad. The pad has light wear from use. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is some stubborn fouling at the muzzle but there does not appear to be any erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. There is thinning and finish loss on the bottom metal with a few spots of oxidation. The barrel has some scattered little scuffs, spots of thinning, and some spots of finish loss from oxidation. The most noticeable defects on the barrel are on the bottom at the front. There are also a few little scratches on the barrel. There are some light handlign marks on the receiver and there are a few nicks into the finish. The bolt handle has some thinning and light discoloration. The screw heads are sharp with very light tooling visible. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. With all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Very early Weatherby rifles were made using Mauser actions and outfitted with custom order components. The customer could get anything their heart desired as long as it was deemed safe. This one has a fancy checkered wood stock, 24” barrel chambered for .300 Weatherby Magnum, and comes topped with a Weatherby Premier scope. This rifle is in Very Good Plus condition with some scattered wear on the wood and metal. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and the action functions correctly. This will be a nice hunting rifle or addition to a collection of vintage rifles. Please see our photos and good luck!
