Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The left of the frame has S&W’s monogram logo, the right side of the frame has the four line Marcas Registradas. The yoke cut is marked with the serial and model numbers. The butt is marked with the serial number. The yoke and the sides of the grip frame have inspection marks. The sideplate is marked with a scene of a fleeing man on horseback with a revolver and “251 of 500”. The right side of the ejector rod shroud is marked “.44 MAGNUM” and the right of the barrel is marked “”HOSTILES””.

Barrel Length: 8 3/8”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramp blade with a red insert. The rear sight is a flat top, square notched and white outlined leaf in a base that is micrometer click adjustable for windage and elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered wood target stocks with S&W medallions at their tops and smooth diamonds around the grip screw escutcheons. The grips have minor handling wearabnd sharp checkering. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered minor marks. The most noticeable marks are two thin streaks on the left side of the top strap. The cylinder has a thin turn-line that has lightly thinned the finsh. The hammer and trigger have minor operational wear and some light thinning to the case-color. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly used. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder locks up with almost zero play on each chamber when the trigger is depressed. The double action trigger is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes in a Springfield Armory padded soft case for protection that contains an HKS Speedloader, cleaning kit, and paperwork including a manual and original sales receipt. The cleaning kit contains a bristle brush, knurrled rod, mop, and a S&W adjustment tool.

Our Assessment: This is a beautiful Model 29-5 from the “Twelve Guns” series produced by Smith & Wesson in 1990. The series was an exclusive for Ellet Bros and the series was done as a one gun per month subscription. The artistic engravings were based on the early S&W advertising paintings. This one is the Hostiles 29-5, number 251 of 500, and sports a 8 3/8” barrel, rich blued finish, ramp front sight, micrometer rear sight, and checkered target stocks. The revolver has great mechaincs, was looked after well by its previous owner, and will make for a great addition to your Smith & Wesson collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
