Markings: The top of the breechblock is marked “US / MODEL / 1873”. The top of the receiver behind the block is marked “177983”. The lockplate is marked with a shielded eagle with crossed arrow and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD”. The barrel band is marked “U” on the right side. The top of the buttplate is marked “US”. The left of the chamber is marked “V / P”, with an eagle head, and “P”. The top of the chamber is marked “R”. The rear sight ladder is marked with numbers 6-12 and “R”. The left side of the rear sight base is marked with numbers 1-5 and “R”. The bottom of the wrist has the circle “P” cartouche and the left of the wrist is marked with a boxed “SWP / 1884” cartouched with angled corners.

Barrel Length: 22”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is small blade on a rectangular base fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is an 1877 Rifle “R” marked sight. The rear sight is difficult to flip up due to the rear screw.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The half-stock is a one-piece smooth walnut with a straight grip, single barrel band (no sling mount), saddle ring, and a metal buttplate. There is no hole underneath the plate. There are cracks at the front and rear of the lockplate. There is a crack on the left side of the stock going from the receiver to the base of the saddle ring bar. There are some scattered dings, compressions, and a few scrapes. The most noticeable scrapes are on the belly. There is what appears to be a hairline crack on the bottom of the wrist at the rear of the tang. The bottom of the forend has a wood filler likely from filling a previous cleaning rod hole. The LOP measures approximately 13 1/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scattered dings, scratches, and some light erosion plus it is developing a patina. Overall, the stock is in about Fine condition as Antique.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The lands are semi-bright and the grooves are grey. There is scattered pitting, mainly in the grooves.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains approximately 70% of its current metal finish. The lock plate has a heavy mottled patina with some surface oxidation. The edges of the trigger guard have been ground and there is evidence of a removed sling swivel hole in the front. The hammer has a heavy patina with some oxidation and light scabbing. The receiver and breechblock have some mottled discoloration, light oxidation, and some little pinpricks. The barrel has some streaks into the finish from abrasive cleaning. There are some dings and scrapes on the barrel under the finish. The barrel has a few scratches and scrapes, the most noticeable is on the top of the chamber. The screw heads range from sharp with deep slots to tool marked with serviceable slots. The markings are generally clear though the majority are shallow and rounded. Overall, this rifle is in about Good condition as Antique & Refinished

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The rifle has a three click hammer. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
