The stock and sights are described below.

Barrel Length: Approximately 24 Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade set between two protective wings. The rear sight is a fully adjustable aperture sight set between two protective wings. The windage knob is marked “LEFT arrow” twice. The elevation knob is marked “BATTLE / RANGE”, “UP” and “DOWN” with arrows.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The left of the stock is marked with an eagle in box cartouche  and the front face of the grip has a circled “P”.
The hardwood stock has a pistol grip, metal nose caps, a stacking loop, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The buttplate is worn to white, showing light scraping and minor surface oxidation. The wood some scattered light nicks, dings, scuffs and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/8 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good-plus overall condition as refinished.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion in the bore and a slight bulge just behind the front sight assembly. The bore shows an M.E. of about 3.5. The throat shows a T.E. of about 4.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish as refinished. The finish is thinning at most edges. There is some scattered finish wear, most notable on the left-rear of the receiver. There are some scattered light scuffs and scratches. The action shows operational wear. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a green canvas sling. It shows light wear and a patch of reddish discoloration. It is in about Very Good condition.

Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was made back in 1942. The metal and wood have been refinished so the rifle looks good for its age. This M1 Garand is a 78 year old service rifle that can still do a lot of work out at the range. It should add nicely to your collection.
